Etsy Launches New Gift Registries – Will They Help Sellers?

Someone searches for a baby item on Etsy every second, the company said in announcing its new gift and baby gift registries this week. The two new registries follow May’s relaunch of its wedding registry that was first launched in 2012.

If they catch on, it could help serve as a reminder to shoppers to turn to Etsy for gifts, which could be good for sellers especially those in certain categories.

Etsy sent an email to shoppers on August 9 announcing “Two NEW registries for you!” The email stated:

“BIG news: Gifting on Etsy just got better! We’re introducing two new types of registries: Etsy Gift Registry, for you to share what you really want with friends and family. And Etsy Baby Registry, for anyone in your life expecting a little one. So start picking out some presents today!”

Etsy’s resident trend expert Dayna Isom Johnson announced the new registries in a post where she wrote about top baby and nursery trends of 2023, writing, “This new offering allows current and expecting parents to easily register on Etsy for meaningful and personalized baby, kids, and nursery gifts from makers all around the world.”

Visiting Etsy.com/registry takes visitors to a screen with three options: Wedding Registry; Baby Registry; and Gift Registry. Clicking on Gift Registry (you must be signed in to proceed) presents a “Let’s get started” pop-up where it prompts members, “What type of gift registry do you want to create?” and offers the following options:

New home

Birthday

Holiday

Other special occasion

The registry guides shoppers to set a date; enter their first and last name (required); set who is allowed to view the registry; and a shipping address. Once the process is complete, Etsy prompts giftees to add items to their registry: “The perfect gifts await! To get started, find an item you love, click the heart icon to Favorite it, and ‘Add to collection’ to place it into your registry.”

Etsy also helps gifters find a registry – but they must know the first and last name of the giftee.

When Etsy relaunched the Wedding registry in May, it said, “As we look to make further developments we’ll explore opportunities for sellers interested in promoting their items to this audience.”

We’re not sure if Etsy has created any such features for sellers as of yet.

Etsy had also told sellers in May that they wouldn’t be alerted when their items are added to a registry, but sellers would be able to see Registries as a traffic referrer in Shop Stats.
